Sports Are AmazingToday's song of the day is Rocky Mountain High by John Denver. I'm writing this just moments after Tim Tebow performed another miracle, and led the Denver Broncos to an overtime win over my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card game Sunday night. I'm in a bit of shock (the win came on the first freaking play of OT) but I wanted to write this while I'm still high on the emotion of the game.
As opposed to being high on Jesus. How freaking great are sports? Seriously, let's think about the last few weeks. The entire country got swept up in the World Junior Hockey Championships, as we do every year, and most of us lost our minds when Canada looked to be making a comeback on the Russians. UFC fans were wowed last Friday by Nate Diaz and Alistair Overeem putting on the fights of their lives. This weekend featured 3 football games that were kind of duds, but then tonight, a struggling QB has his best game ever, the powerhouse veteran team loses a ton of players to injury, but still makes a comeback, only to lose on the first play of overtime. Add in the emotion of the Canucks/Bruins rematch yesterday, Jerome Iginla scoring his 500th goal, the Winter Classic, local product Emerance Maschmeyer helping Canada win gold at the Women's U-18 championships... I could go on for days. No matter what's happening in the world, a recession, wars overseas, bizarre weather, we can always seem to escape in to the high drama of professional sports. That's not to say those things are unimportant, but sports always seems to be there to help us take our mind off the more serious things happening, even if just for a little bit.
Sometimes we get too distracted... Every play can be a roller coaster of emotions, from delight to despair in one interception, one turnover, one big body check, and we happily pile in to ride again on the next play. Friendships can be formed over a shared favorite team, enemies made over long standing rivalries, but in the end we all just love sports. I know that it can be easy to get mad at spoiled brat players who make millions of dollars, and complain about how hard their lives are, and I agree those guys can frig right off. (Sorry, been watching a lot of Trailer Park Boys.) But I would never give up on the rush I get from watching a running back crash through the line, and get in to the back field. I wouldn't walk away from a perfect passing play that breaks through the middle of the ice, only to have a sure goal snatched up by a hot goaltender. Walk off home runs, wild knock out finishes, three point buzzer beaters, and most importantly, the raw emotion of sport.
Now if you'll excuse me, the Wings game is on. Feedback time, share my love of sports? Or do you think this it's all a little bit silly? You can drop a response on Twitter to me, or The Goat, of if you do Facebook, we've got that too. (Drew Dalby, The Goat). Or, look down, and make words happen in the comment box. -DLB blog comments powered by Disqus |
