Doing Everything Wrong

Never make your trainer mad. It never works out in your favor. I learned that lesson the hard way this past weekend.

Last week, I told Jenna that I was going to be visiting some old friends in Edmonton over the weekend. I told her that, while visiting these friends, I was probably going to go over my 3 drink limit. For those that missed that blog, if you go over 3 drinks, between the dehydration, and the calories, it's about the same as hitting go on the wayback machine and wiping out a week of training. Jenna warned me about all that, and that she would be working me out extra hard when I got back if I did it, but as much as I want to lose weight, I'm not willing to stop living to do it.

That said, I probably overdid it a little.

Just a little though...

So, needless to say, I didn't have lofty expectations for my weigh in on Tuesday. I mean, I did do a pair of spin classes last week before I left, and I ended up lost in Sherwood Park on Sunday, and walked for a couple hours in the sun, so I did put in some extra cardio, but I didn't think it would be enough to make up for the drinking.

Side note, spin class is murder. Seriously, I went on Wednesday, and there was no way I could keep up with the other riders. When the class was over, I tried to stand up off the bike, and almost fell right back down. On Thursday, after my regular session, I had another spin class, and this time I couldn't even make it through the whole thing. Keep that in mind folks, if you want to do spin, make sure you're in decent shape before you try take on back to back classes. That said, it's a hell of a workout, which I proved at the weigh in.

You see, despite breaking the drinking rule, when I weighed in Tuesday morning, I had lost weight. Not a bunch, mind you, but I went from 282.7 lbs, down to 281.1 lbs. When I saw that, I assumed that it was water weight, because of the dehydration of drinking, but when my body composition test finished, my water had actually gone up. Probably because I drank so much to get over the hangover...

I think we've all been there...

Stranger than that, and the real testament to the effects of the extra workouts and Jenna's kick ass training sessions, is that I have lost another 6 lbs of body fat. When I started at Motion Fitness at the end of July, I had 95 lbs of body fat, and now I'm down to 73.6 lbs. Now, when I turn sideways, I'm human shaped, as opposed to looking like some sort of mascot for oranges.

This is a perfect example, not of the effects of drinking on a diet, but of the fact that hard work means that you can lose weight, and still live your life. Yes, drinking on a diet is counter productive. So is eating a Big Mac, or sleeping in until noon, or any other number of things. But if you stick close to your diet, and if you make sure that you're putting your time in at the gym, you can still do everyday things, and achieve your fitness goals. We have disproved the myth that if you want to be in shape, you have to give up everything that's fun.

Though, there are still some limits to what you can do.

Like I said at the beginning though, never upset your trainer. A successful weigh in did not stop Jenna from setting out to prove a point. She warned me that she would work the liquor out of me, and good lord did she ever. In my first workout blog, I mentioned that I worked so hard that I actually threw up in the gym. Since then, I've had hard workouts, but nothing like that first day. Nothing, until yesterday that is. Running, jumping, lifting, pushing, and falling, though that falling wasn't really part of the workout, so much as it was my body trying to bail on me. I got through it, and almost got sick again. In fact, it took me 20 minutes before I could even go to the locker room and change. When I got home, I fell on to the couch, and couldn't even write, which is why you're getting this blog today, instead of last night.

Well, that, and I'm on vacation. Hence the drinking too much before the sun went down.

In the next blog, I'll talk about the newest part of my fitness team, Motion Fitness' new dietician, Heather! If you have any diet questions, throw them in the comments below, and we'll try get them answered!
