Guest Workout Series #5 - New Girl Brittany

So far, while all our Guest Workouts have been very different, I wouldn't say that any one person had a harder session than any other. That is, up until yesterday. Meet Brittany.

Brittany just moved here from BC, and was very excited to get out for one of these workouts. Her excitement trailed off a bit though when she met the dreaded TRX. Our session was once again with Christina, and again, it was a Circuit Training run focused on core and endurance. We started with a mini-spin class, and moved in to various lifts, and holds, and stretches. Towards the end though, that's when the TRX came in to play. In case you missed that blog, or forgot, this is the TRX torture rack.

It's like a child's playground toy, if we hated our children more than anything in the world.

See the girl who has her feet up in the straps, holding herself up by her arms? That was us. And when you're in that position, then you have to start doing things like knee lifts, or swinging side to side. Or, if you're me, what you do is struggle to hold yourself up, and then crash to the ground like a Russian spy satellite. When it was all over, Brittany said that she wanted to get a membership, but she would be staying away from the TRX at all costs. Let's see what else Brittany had to say.

  • Do you go to the gym?  Not at the moment, but I did belong to one back in Victoria.
  • Have you ever worked with a trainer before? No
  • How did you think it would go before you got there? I was a little scared, but still confident I would make it through.
  • Were you surprised by what you could actually do? Some of the exercises, yes!
  • Did you want to quit at all during the workout? Yes. TRX is not my friend. My lower back is not strong enough for that kind of insanity right now, so I think I should work on that before I even think about TRX again...
  • How did you feel when it was over? GREAT
  • What was your favorite part of the session? I loved the inchworm exercise!
  • Would you work out with a trainer again? Sure, if they were free! HA!

To clarify, the inchworm involves putting your hands and feet on the floor, walking out on your hands, then walking back in with your feet. It's actually a really good core drill.

I do feel like I should show the TRX a little love though, because we all talk about it like it was designed by the devil himself, but it really is a great workout device. It just takes a lot of getting used to, because it's not how we usually do things. Most people get in the gym, and it's all about lifting weights, and running, and stuff like that, so it's weird to suspend yourself with the straps, or train using your own body weight instead of bells and bars. Everytime I do a workout on the TRX though, I get better at it.

Now we only have 1 guest workout left, with our intrepid HQ new reporter Andrea. We'll be in the gym on Friday, so expect a new blog after that. In the meantime, you still have time to send in your entries for our Personal Training session giveaway! Tell me why you think a session with Jenna and I would be just what you need to get in to working out, and you might get to do just that, totally free! E-mail me, drew@borderrock.com.
