Guest Workout Series #4 - Morning Show Char

My guest at the gym on Thursday was the woman I spend the most time with, other than my wife, Char, my co-host on the Morning Breath.

Char used to be a bigger girl, but made incredible progress with a diet plan, and lost 55 pounds! She works out every now and again, but is looking to get into a regular workout routine, and thought that this would be her perfect chance to kickstart the process. Jenna was away on Thursday, but she came out with a routine for Christina, one of the other great trainers at Motion Fitness, to put us through.

Circuit Training is a workout that involves doing many different exercises for a specific period of time, then moving on to the next. Our circuit was all about core work, and endurance training, neither of which I am good at. I grumbled and struggled my way through the whole thing, but Char kept pretty solid composure. In fact, she was the quietest of the 4 guests we've had so far. There was no complaining, no struggling, just focus on working out. She did, however, have some struggles with her breathing. Christina had to remind her to breath a few times throughout the session. This caught up with her at the end, when she got overheated, and light headed during our last exercise. She almost got sick, but recovered like a champ. Let's see what she said about the session.

  • Do you go to the gym? Haven't been in way too long.
  • Have you ever worked with a trainer before? Nope. Christina was the first to work with me.
  • How did you think it would go before you got there? I was slightly petrified I'd die.
  • Were you surprised by what you could actually do? YES! I haven't been super active for quite a while so I was really surprised I managed to survive most of the workout.
  • Did you want to quit at all during the workout? Yes and no. I felt really determined to work as hard as I could until the bitter end, but when I started to feel like I was going to pass out while I was suspended in mid-air I had to stop to cool down. I was a little disappointed I didn't finish everything.
  • How did you feel when it was over? Not as bad as I thought I would. It was challenging for sure, but I was really happy I went and felt really refreshed once I cooled down and didn't feel like vomiting anymore.
  • What was your favorite part of the session? Rowing machine. I really like doing cardio with the added bonus of the resistance, so it was a nice way to start things off!
  • Would you work out with a trainer again? Hell yes! I liked the encouragement and the fact that she knows how to help achieve the specific results you want to achieve. Christina was my hero today.

After the workout, I was feeling pretty good, not nearly as sore as I usually am the next day, which is good because I had a show to do Saturday in Edmonton.

3 years ago, when I lived in Edmonton, I worked for a pro wrestling company called the Prairie Wrestling Alliance. They put on shows around Alberta, drawing crowds in the hundreds. On Saturday I made my return to the company, and got to do so with my new look. Last time I was there, I was much heavier, and it showed. Last night, I stepped through the curtain, and didn't have to worry about my appearance. Before the show I was warming up in the ring, and my cardio was supremely improved. I was able to put on a great performance, all thanks to this workout plan, and Jenna. A friend of mine asked how you keep working out, even when you know it's going to hurt. Moments like I had last night are exactly how you keep going.

There's still two weeks left for you to get your name in for our Personal Training Session draw. E-mail me, drew@borderrock.com, and let me know why you think a session with Jenna would help jumpstart your fitness.
