Guest Workout Series #3 - Donnie From Sales

Today's guest on the Workout Blog is our Senior Sales Rep at The Goat, and big wheel at Original Joe's (that should be good for at least a free meal...), Donnie Atkinson.

First look at Donnie, you can tell that he's been in a gym or two in his day, so I was actually nervous to have him come in for a workout session with Jenna and I, because I thought he might get bored doing what I do. What we found out though is that, if you work out a specific way, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll have an easy time trying something different.

Our session this week was like a mix of the sessions we did with Brad and Jeanine. We started with some kettle bell lifts, and some weight training, before moving over to the TRX rack. Donnie, who had actually already been to the gym earlier in the day as part of his usual routine, was a stud in the workout. He was crushing the weight stuff, and when we got to the TRX, once Jenna showed him the proper form, he was banging out reps. Whereas I was ahead of the game with our past guest workouts, I found myself just trying to keep up on this one. It was actually pretty great, because everytime I would have normally fallen off, and tried to take a break, I found myself trying to keep going, because of how well Donnie was doing. This is why a lot of people go to the gym with someone else, or if you lack friends like I do, you get a personal trainer to give you that same encouragement.

That said, no one is this happy in the gym.

One of the things that Donnie said that I really liked was, at one point he thought he might get sick. As opposed to me, Brad, or Jeanine, who turned ghost white, and looked like death was near, Donnie just shrugged, and said "Oh well, just means I'm working hard." and started again on the TRX. I was blown away. When I got sick on my first session, I immediately turned in to a 6 year old child. I started wandering around, whining, and basically just waiting to throw up. Donnie felt that same feeling, and then proceeded to do 30 squats. It really goes to show how much of working out is mental toughness. Let's see what Donnie had to say about his session.

  • Do you go to the gym? I go 6 days a week, mostly weight training.
  • Have you ever worked with a trainer before? Yes.

  • How did you think it would go before you got there? I was nervous, as it's different training from what I typically do.
  • Were you surprised by what you could actually do? I wasn't surprised by what I could do, but I was surprised by how hard the movements were, and how high the intensity was.
  • Did you want to quit at all during the workout? I didn't want to quit at all.
  • How did you feel when it was over? I felt like I had run a marathon.
  • What was your favorite part of the session? The rope swing, and getting properly stretched by Aanchal at the end.
  • Would you work out with a trainer again? I would work out with Drew and Jenna again, for sure. It's great motivation.
Before Donnie got in, I had my weekly weigh in with Jenna. Last week I talked about how I had hit a plateau in my weight loss, so we made some changes to my diet, and the workouts. I stepped on the scale for the first time since, and the progress was awesome. Last week, I weighed in at 281 lbs, with 79 lbs of body fat. This week, I'm down to 275 lbs, down 6 lbs, and 70 lbs of body fat, for a loss of 9 lbs. These are both down from my initial weight of 297 lbs, and 95 lbs of fat. The 9 lb loss is incredible to me. It shows just how fickle the body can be. I'm not eating any better than I was, or working out more, but because we're doing different exercises, and switched around some of my eating times, it seems to have shocked my body in to getting back in gear on the loss. So now, according to the machine, I'm 35 lbs of body fat away from being healthy, which would put me somewhere around 240, assuming I don't put on any muscle whatsoever. My mom tells me she would like me to get down to 200, to which I had to explain I would probably die. She decided that she'd rather have me live, than be 200 lbs, which is nice.

Tomorrow, my co-host on the Goat's Morning Breath, Char, will be coming in for a guest workout. Char lost 55 pounds with a diet plan a while back, so we'll see how she handles a full blown workout. Remember, if you want to come in for a guest workout, all you have to do is email me at Drew@BorderRock.com, or leave a comment below, explaining why you think you a personal training session would help you find your way to being healthy. We'll pick one winner at the end of the month to come in with Jenna and I.
