Guest Workout Series #2 - Brad the Writer

Meet Brad.

Brad's dead now. RIP Brad.

When Brad was still with us, he was a brand new Creative Writer at The Goat. That means he writes the commercials you hear when we're not yapping or playing music. You all officially feel less sympathy for him already. Brad's 19 years old, just moved from BC, and couldn't wait to get in the gym for this session. When we started with a run, and some mountain climbers, Brad's enthusiasm disappeared a little.

Jenna told us that once we were warmed up, she was going to make us work a lot of leg stuff. We did a little light lifting and such to get ready, and then it was on to the leg press. With some weight I never wanted to know on the bar, we had to do 20 presses. Then we got a 10 second rest before having to do 18. Then rest, then 16, and so on down to 2. She made us both do it twice each, but since there was only one machine, Jenna also improvised another exercise that involved pushing a 25 pound plate across the floor, back and forth across the gym. By the time Brad was on his last session on the press machine, all semblence of the happy young man that had walked in the door were gone.

We also did some one leg squats on the TRX, while Aanchal watched on to see if my knee would explode, and then we finished with resistance running. For those that read the blog at the start, you'll remember this as the drill that almost killed me. You take a giant band, and put it around 2 people. The lead person has to then run sprints, while the back person leans back to make it hard as hell. When I did this the first time, I did it twice and felt like I was going to die a foul death on the floor of the gym. Brad had the same feeling. He ran the first time, poor guy had to drag me around instead of Jenna, and that was enough. He had to tap out, because going any further would have probably meant throwing up, and so far that's a special priviledge just for me apparently. I strapped up with Jenna, and this time after 2 runs, I didn't die! In that other blog, I said that one of my goals with this was to be able to do this drill properly, and today I did just that. I felt like I was crossing an Olympic finish line.

While I was flying, Brad headed to the showers to cry a bit. When he was done, we asked him our Guest Workout Questionnaire.

  • Do you go to the gym? I did, and am trying to go more often.
  • Have you ever worked with a trainer before? Nope...
  • How did you think it would go before you got there? I didn't think I would be as tired as I was after the first couple of exercises.
  • Were you surprised by what you could actually do? In my almost passing out state, yes I was.
  • Did you want to quit at all during the workout? OH HELL YES!
  • How did you feel when it was over? All the blood in my face was gone, but after the stretches I felt a bit better.
  • What was your favorite part of the session? The stretching.
  • Would you work out with a trainer again? After I had conditioned myself more, yes, yes I would.

Poor Brad. Aanchal came over and put us through some stretches, and the workout was finished. Oh, and Aanchal also slipped me one of Motion Fitness' brand new Smoothies. I had Orange Creamsicle, and it was AWESOME. Seriously, if you head in for a workout, it is the perfect way to wrap up. Cool, refreshing, and delightful.

Next week, our super jacked sales guy, Donnie will be coming in for a workout, and my co-host Char will get in the gym as well, so watch for blogs to see how they do.

You could come for a session too! If you've ever wanted to see what working with a personal trainer is like, we're giving away one free session right here on the blog. All you have to do is write a comment below, or send an email to drew@borderrock.com, and tell me why you want to get healthy, and how a personal trainer would help you. Sucking up about the blog won't hurt either. Just saying. Jenna and I will pick 1 person at the end of September to come in and get a Guest Workout at Motion Fitness.
