Lloydminster Vandals – AFL Football The Vandals became the 2010 Alberta Football League Champions and competed for the National title in Ontario. Brett Morrow – LCHS Barons Football Defensive captain for the team in his final year. Kory Chisholm – Lloydminster Bobcats AJHL player of the week, scored a Hat trick in a Bobcats win. Drew Bexson – Holy Rosary Raiders Football 4 rushing touchdowns in one game Kristin Bakewell – Drag Racing Competed in a provincial drag racing meet Peggy Sommerfeld - Lakeland College Rustlers – Volleyball Well rounded in school and volleyball while balancing an active social life Team Leckie – Curling Competed at Nationals in Prince Edward Island Lakeland College Rustlers Men’s Basketball Team The Rustlers Men’s Basketball team is currently ranked #1 in all of Canada!!! They recently travelled to Vancouver for the Kwantlen Polytechnic University tournament where they had a 3-0 record and won the tournament title!!! Jade Langenfurth, Emma Dodyk, Haley Leasak, Jenna Merth, Sarah St.Marie, Ryan Dodyk, Donovan Sullivan, Adam St.Marie – Lloydminster Border Blade Speed Skaters All 8 of these young skaters competed in Calgary on January 15th and 16th and qualified to represent Team Alberta at the National Long Track Championships in Winnipeg on February 5 and 6!!! Aaron Curwin – Paintball Aaron spends his free time teaching younger kids leadership and getting them active by playing Paintball at Gopher Hill. He introduces the sport of Paintball to youth and gives them someone to look up to. Clayton Schlosser – High Performance Air Rifle Clayton is a member of the Saskatchewan High Performance Air Rifle Team and recently attended the Canadian Air Gun Grand Prix, receiving first in his class!! He has also qualified for the Canada Winter Games in Halifax!!! Ian McAllister - Lloydminster Jr. B Bandits Captain Ian became the 1st player in the NEABJHL to reach 50 goals this season. He is also captain of the team, a hard worker and great leader. This is his final year with the Bandits and the team is proud of his accomplishments!! Yenell Graham – Sno-Cross Snowmobile racing Yenell captured two 1st place medals and a 2nd place medal at an Ultimate Canadian Motorsports Association event in Weyburn. He defeated competitors from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario! Nolan and Aidan Merriweather – Freestyle Skiing 16 year old Nolan and his 14 year old brother Aidan of Paynton recently earned the oppurtuinity to represent Saskatchewan at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax in freestyle skiing!! The Lloyd Comp Boys Curling Team – Curling Won provincials against a boys team from Red Deer Lloydminster Bobcats – Junior A Hockey Coach Brian Curran and the Bobcats had a great 2010-11 season and playoff run!! After upsetting the Grand Prairie Storm in the 1st round, the Cats put up a strong fight against Spruce Grove and proudly represented the Border City!!! Shaelyn Brown – Explosion Gymnastics Shaelyn competed in the National Pre-Novice Elite category at the Can-Am Competeion in Saskatoon earlier this month. She placed second on bars, first on vault, first on beam and third on floor and was first in the all-around!! The Staff and Volunteers at Mount Joy Mount Joy had its best year ever and it was all due to the staff at the ski hill and all the volunteers who helped with the grooming and maintenance of the hill throughout the winter. If it wasn’t for those people who donated their time and efforts, the Midwest wouldn’t have Mount Joy. The Kitscoty Canucks – Hockey/Fundraising Through the recent tournament and fundraising auctions that were held, The Canucks efforts lead to over 23,000 dollars raised for Norman Sewchuk’s wheelchair accessible van!!! A big thank you goes out to the team for their hard work in raising the money!!! Kings Husky’s Red Dogs – CDMFA Football The defending Tier 3 Champions opened their 2011 Capital District Minor Football Association season on April 8th with a big 26-24 win over the Mill Woods Grizzlies. Donivan Grannum – Team Alberta North Football After a tryout in Edmonton, Donivan was selected to represent Team Alberta North. The running back was one of 160 athletes battling for only 40 spots and he’ll be on the field representing Northern Alberta in the Bantam Bowl in Edmonton during May long weekend!! Jordan Sperounes – Team Alberta North Football Jordan will be joining fellow Red Dog Donivan Grannum on Team Alberta North. The defensive end tackle was one of 160 athletes battling for only 40 spots and he’ll be on the field representing Northern Alberta in the Bantam Bowl in Edmonton during May long weekend!! Tyler Busch – Lloydminster Heat - Hockey Tylerhas been drafted by the Prince George Cougars in the 2011 W-H-L Bantam Draft. Busch was picked up in Round 8. He led the Lloydminster Heat in scoring during the 2010-11 Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League season with 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points in 32 games. Jake Hotchkiss – Mounties Football The Lloydminster native was named Offense MVP of the Mount Allison University’s Football Mounties, leading his team to a home playoff game for the first time since 1998. Jake is also an Atlantic University Sport all-star and a nominee for the CIS All-Canadian award. Jerrica Waltz - Vermilion Bantam Tigers Jerrica was selected to take part in the Team Alberta training camp for the 2011 National Women’s Under 18 Championship in Quebec this November. She’s the goaltender for the Vermilion Bantam Tigers and is one of 46 girls trying out for the Team Alberta roster!! Kevin Deagle– Lloydminster Bobcats The 6’3, 190 pound forward has committed to the University of Toronto for the 2011-12 hockey season. Kevin had 9 goals and 11 assists last season with the Bobcats and will bring strong leadership and physicality to the U of T. Chris King – PWM Steel Dodgers Starting shortstop and infield captain of the Lloydminster PWM Steel Dodgers, batted .400 with 6 RBI’s this weekend in Melfort to help lead the Dodgers to the Ducks Unlimited shootout championship. Michael Heffner – Lloydminster Bobcats The 4 year veteran of the Bobcats in off to the Wentworth Institute of Technology of the NCAA. Heffner was the leading scorer for the team in last years playoffs and served as Assistant Captain of the Bobcats. Brant McAllister – Kitscoty Chaos Drillers Brant finished 4th in league scoring this year with 35 goals and 27 assists in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. The Drillers are part of the Tier II North Division with team from Edmonton and all over the Midwest. Jaimee Springer - Javelin Jaimee is a Lloydminster native and former Lloyd Comp student who will be participating in the Javelin event at the Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops. She recently was in her first international competition at the Junior Pan Am Games in Florida where she threw for 43.51 meters. Russ Nielsen - Wilkie Brewers Congratulations to Russ for being named the NSRBL’s 2011 MVP. Russ had a great season in the batter’s box and from the mound. The league also wants to congratulate the runners up Jason Fetcher and Colby Field. Both players well deserving with the excellent season they had. John “Shamwow” Klassen – Local Boxing John Klassen had a big night at Lloydminster Proving Grounds on August 20th winning his qualifying bout to move on to beat Matt Willis for the Northern Factory Workwear Middleweight Championship Belt. The Jungle Kats - Co-ed Soccer Congratulations to The Jungle Kats who defeated Finger Lick ‘n Good who finished in 1st at the Lloydminster and District Soccer Association’s adult co-ed year end tournament last month!! Travis Wellman – Lloydminster Bobcats The 17 year old rookie notched his first ever AJHL goal to help the Bobcats get past the Calgary Mustangs 4-3 last weekend. The Calgary native is new to Lloydminster, having played last season with the Calgary Buffaloes of the Midget Triple A league, having 19 points in 24 games. Andrew Koep - Lloydminster Heat Koep scored a hat-trick on October 2nd in a 5-1 win over the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers. The win was the 3rd straight to start the season from the Lloydminster Universal bantam AAA Heat. Tyler Briggs - Lloydminster Bobcats Briggs notched a shutout in a 2-0 win over Grande Prairie Strom earning him the AJHL Player of the Week honours for the week of October 3-9. The 19 year old 3rd year member of the Bobcats was 2-0 that week and currently sits at the top of the league in goals against. Rohan Rage - Lloydminster Minor Hockey Association The Rohan Rage sit at the top of the league standings with a perfect 5-0 record to start the new season. The Rage picked up wins 4 and 5 this past weekend with a 4-0 win over Sherwood Park and knocking off Spruce Grove 6-2. Brandon Peterson - Vermilion Marauders The quarterback threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in a 67-8 blowout win over the Vegreville Vortex on October 22nd. The Marauders move on to face the Lloyd Comp Barons on October 29th. Holy Rosary Raiders - Wheatland Football Congrats to the Holy Rosary Raiders who became the Wheatland Champions with a win over the Cold Lake Royals!! Josh Atkinson - Lloydminster Bobcats The Bobcats defenseman was named AJHL Player of the Week for November 7th-13th after recording 2 goals and 3 assists in 3 games. The 19 year old from Spruce Grove is among the points leaders for defensemen in the North Division. Emerance Maschmeyer - LloydminsterBobcats The female goaltender has been named to Team Canada's National Women's U-18 Team, which competes in the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey U-18 Women's World Championship in the Czech Republic December 31 to January 7. Jamie Crooks - Victoria Royals The Vermilion native has 20 goals and 39 points in 40 games this season with the WHL’s Victoria Royals. Crooks originally started his WHL career in Saskatoon with the Blades and is a former member of the Lloydminster Midget AAA Bobcats. Kadeem Willis - Rustlers Men’s Basketball Kadeem had a big weekend for the Men’s Rustlers Basketball team on the weekend of January 20-21 putting up 32 points and 29 rebounds, helping the Rustlers win both games against the Augustana Vikings. Lloydminster Border Kings – Chinook Hockey League Heading into the playoffs, the Border Kings went undefeated in January on their way to clinching the top spot in the Chinook Hockey League with a 20-4 record on the season Scott Manners rink – Curling The local foursome who play out of North Battleford will be representing Saskatchewan at the Tim Hortons Brier in Saskatoon from March 3 to 11th. Congrats Scott Manners, Ryan Deis, Tyler Lang and Mike Armstrong!! Coach Mike Applegate – Vermilion Tigers Mikey Apples coached his final game February 22nd in Vermilion when the Tigers lost in double overtime to the Lloydminster Bandits. Coach Applegate has retired after being the bench boss for the Tigers for 7 years and was instrumental in youth hockey programs in the Lloydminster and Vermilion area. Holy Rosary Raiders Girls – Curling The Holy Rosary Raiders Girl Curling team recently completed a perfect season. The girls went a perfect 12-0 and ended their season with a Provincial Gold Medal win over Hay Lakes on March 3rd in Mannville. Congrats to skip Karli Makichul, second Macala Bernard, third Tannis Steinacher, and lead Samantha Braun!! The Kitscoty Canucks – Hockey/Fundraising Through their recent hockey tournament, auctions, and fundraising efforts, the Canucks had their best year ever raising $33,000 for Kerry Golden and his family. The money will cover some of the expense for Kerry’s treatment and travel to Vancouver in his fight with Lyme Disease. Thanks to everyone who helped support the cause!! Scott Hood - Lloydminster Border Kings The Border Kings forward recently retired after his 13th season in senior men’s hockey. Hood played in the Allan Cup on 9 different occasions, winning the title 3 times including in 2007 with the Border Kings. LloydminsterRed Dogs - High School Football The Red Dogs earned their way into the league finals with a 32-26 comeback win over the Leduc Tiger Cats on May 6th. The Red Dogs will now face the Battle River Shock, the only team that defeated Lloyd all season. Lloydminster- Hockey Day In Canada host city Through years of local support of minor hockey and the Save the Bobcats campaign in 2011, Lloydminster was awarded the chance to host Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada on CBC. The event takes place in February of 2013 and will feature CBC personalities Ron MacLean and Don Cherry. Cheyenne Thorpe - Lloyd Comp Barons Track and Field Cheyenne brought home Silver for the Lloyd Comp Barons after the Alberta Provincials Competition in Edmonton. Cheyenne took 2nd in the 4 by 100 metre relay and also placed 5th in the 200 metre race. Wheatland Xtreme - Lacrosse The Xtreme overcame a rough start to the season by finishing 8-2 down the stretch and earning a playoff berth in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League playoffs. The Xtreme take on the Vermilion ROAR Saturday July 7th at 4pm at the Vermilion Stadium Nick Pernitysky - Wilkie Brewers Congrats to Nick of the Wilkie Brewers for being named the 2012 MVP of the NSRBL regular season. Lloydminster Twins - NSRBL Champions The Twins won their 4th straight NSRBL title with back to back wins over the Meadow Lake Sox. Tatjhannah Josuttes - Track and Field 15 year old Tatjhannah recenty competed in the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Charlottetown PEI. The student from Paradise Hill placed her personal best in two of the three events she competed in: 100 metre hurdles, long jump, and triple jump 2013 Kitscoty Canucks - Charity Hockey It was another great fundraising year for the Kitscoty Canucks who helped raise more than $16,000 for the Ogden family through their annual charity hockey tournament. Women's Rustlers - Futsal The ladies won their first ever gold medal in team history with a 3-2 win over Medicine Hat at the recent ACAC championships in Red Deer. The men's futsal team also did well capturing silver in Red Deer.
Ashley Lange - Rustlers Women's Volleyball
Ashley walked away with the most awards at the Rustlers Awards Ceremony, winning Rustlers Female Athlete of the Year, ACAC Athlete of the Year, ACAC All-Conference Player, CCAA All-Canadian, and the MVP of Women's Volleyball.
Jason Wert, Todd McNaughton, Cole Kosteriva, Nathan Newman - Lloydminster Bandits
All 4 players were honoured and given framed jerseys at the club's annual awards banquet. They are all 22 years old and ineligible to return to the Bandits next season.
Shaelyn Brown - Explosion Gymnastics
Shaelyn will be competeing at Nationals after she medalled in the all-around category at the Saskatchewan Provincials at the Servus Sports Centre in Lloydminster last week.
Kale Clague - Lloydminster Heat Bantam AAA
The defenseman and Lloydminster native was drafted 6th overall at the WHL Draft May 2nd by the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Brandon Baddock and Presten Kopeck - WHL Championship
Vermilion product Baddock of the Edmonton Oil Kings and Presten Kopeck of the Portland Winterhawks are going head to head in the WHL Championship. The winning team will earn a spot at the 2013 Memorial Cup in Saskatoon.
